Look at me!!
Look at me, and what do you see?
I wonder if you see as clearly as me.....
For I see some of you quickly look away,
Unsure what to do; unsure what to say.
I know you don't mean to be unkind,
But I see the thoughts running through your mind:
"What a beautiful child!" "How very sad."
But look at my SMILE -- can't you see I'm glad?
I'm glad just to be alive today.
I'm glad to see my siblings run and play.
I'm glad for a Mom and Dad like mine.
I'm glad for our faith in a God divine.
I'm glad when my kitty cuddles by me.
I'm glad for my giggles that set me free.
I'm glad for those of you who take the time
To stroke my cheek, it feels sublime!
I'm glad when my hand touches a toy.
I'm glad for bright colors that speak of joy.
I'm glad for the softness just before dawn.
I'm glad for the evenings when the lights come on.
Look at the intelligence dancing in my eyes;
I feel. I think! That's no surprise.
Listen to my laughter from deep inside.
Look at my Mommy glowing with pride.
There's something "wrong" with each of us you know;
Sometimes on the outside where it can show.
But sometimes it's hidden deep within,
Like false pride and smugness - what a sin!
How sad that you feel so sorry for me,
For I'm luckier than most of you, you see.
Most of you have to wait for a life after this
To know the serenity of an angel's kiss,
But I feel those kisses every day,
That's why I giggle when I hear you say,
"What a beautiful child!" "How very sad."
Just look at my smile -- can't you see I'm GLAD!!!

Please note: The smiling child on this page is Heather, one of our own Diva Sue's children. When I asked Sue if I could share this page, this is what she said:
"Peg now you have me in tears. This is beautiful... this says it all. Our little Heather has a giggle that comes all the way from her toes...(she is nonverbal, nonmobile, tube fed, deaf, seizures -- but so full of life... she is the smile that brightens our mornings and it doesn't disappear until her little eyes close in slumber at night... this is gorgeous. Feel free to use it wherever you want... thank you for sharing our precious blessing with others. Hugs, Sue"
