Once In A Blue Moon

by Peggy Swycaffer

Once in a blue moon, a child is born who is so exquisite, so sensitive, so superlative in every way that for just a fraction of a second the whole universe pauses. Flora and fauna alike take in the wonder, and then life goes on with most of us unaware that something spectacular has just occurred.

Once in a blue moon, the angels smile down upon such a child, and, laughing, gift her with smoky eyes and red hair to alert the world and give those around her fair warning of what lies ahead. Once in a blue moon, this child is placed in the only family that is perfect for her -- tender enough to nurture her fragile roots while cheering her development of wings; yet tough enough to withstand her many mini-mutinies as she tries oh so often to spread those wings beforetimes.

Once in a blue moon, this child not only survives adolescence, but goes on to become a phenomenal woman, with all the nurturing and caring that the hard knocks of life have taught her to give of so freely. She was hurt often, because she loves deeply and unconditionally. But the depth of her sorrows is what has allowed her to recognize and appreciate the height of her joy when her love is mutually returned. Having survived the darkness of the deepest chasms, she is free to revel in the dazzling light of the highest peaks.

And once in a blue moon, this child’s birthday arrives even as the true blue moon rises. What fitting and appropriate timing, as if the very heavens recognize this special day for this unique lady.

Peg’s note: Blue moons are not quite as rare as the old saying would lead us to believe; yet they occur only once every 2.8 years or so, being the second of two full moons in any single calendar month. The last one was October 31st, 2001; the next one not until May31st, 2007. So the vast majority of us will never celebrate a birthday
